As Telling Queer History approached its sunset, our last two offerings were 2SLGBTQIA+ history walking tours near Powderhorn Park in Minneapolis and Downtown St. Paul! Attendees explored the rich queer history of the neighborhoods as they visited these storied landmarks and heard from live storytellers.

Missed the tours? You can download the zines below, which provide an overview of the stops and offer a self-guided tour option. We will also be passing our research materials over to our partner and funder, the Minnesota Humanities Center, who will facilitate future tours.

You can also check out a captioned archival video from the Dyke Heights storytellers here

On Sunday, June 30th, attendees met at Powderhorn Park to tour the neighborhood endearingly known as “Dyke Heights.” Researched by Mounica Kota and led by Tour Guide Gereon Fuller, our Powderhorn/Central Minneapolis Walking Tour explored the homes & meeting places of queer artists, lovers, and trailblazers who found community in Dyke Heights, featuring live storytelling from Renee Sugrue, Erika Thorne, and Eleanor Savage. This zine was passed out to attendees and provides an overview of the tour stops.

On Sunday, July 6th, participants met at Camp Bar & Cabaret before embarking on the eight-stop Downtown St. Paul tour. This tour focused more on establishments than queer homes as discussed in Powderhorn. Many of these businesses are historic and protected, therefore still in existence unlike some lesser known queer spaces which have long been defunct.
